Facebook Messenger Drops Phone Number Registration, Facebook Account Now Required

Facebook Messenger is undoubtedly one of the most popular messaging apps today, allowing users to communicate via text, images, or video. Almost every Facebook user relies on this app to message their friends and family. Facebook Messenger also allowed users to sign up via just their mobile number to use the app. However, Facebook is now quietly removing the feature and asking everyone to simply sign up for a Facebook account to use Messenger.

The change will only affect new users who want to stay using Facebook Messenger or Messenger Lite. The change has also been confirmed by Facebook’s help centre.

Facebook has also hinted at integrating its messaging platforms such as Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram into a single end-to-end encrypted messaging platform earlier this year. This move could signal a small start towards that goal.

Facebook is expected to integrate the three platforms, allowing users within each of these apps to communicate with one another without leaving the platform.
