The Huawei Free Fire Showdown winners have been crowned! On 14 December the twelve best Garena Free Fire teams in South Africa took to Bermuda one final time to determine the grand champions of the Huawei Free Fire Showdown.
The Huawei Free Fire Showdown saw over 700 mobile gamers take to the popular mobile battle royale, Garena Free Fire. These 700 players fought through 3 weeks of group stages, playoffs and the grand finals. Nearly 200 teams did battle, but only 3 of them could walk away with their share of the R185 000 prize pool in cash and prizes – the largest prize pool of any Free Fire competition in Africa.
The teams that managed to come out on top were:
- Dream Crushers
- Great Speed
- Alpha Crew
MidNyte, captain of Great Speed, says the team that placed second is ecstatic for their monitors. “The tournament was way different from any other Free Fire tournaments I’ve been a part of. Firstly this was the biggest prize pool and secondly the professionalism of the host was amazing,” MidNyte continued. The teams were also overwhelmed by and grateful for the impact Huawei has had on mobile gaming in SA. “I think Huawei did a great job of putting mobile gaming in the spotlight, many people think people who play mobile are not real gamers. I am thankful that Huawei hosted a big tournament, hopefully next year there will be even esports team looking into Free Fire”.
“All in all, this tournament was an unprecedented success,” says Mettlestate’s community manager, Carly Twaddle. “Never has a mobile gaming tournament in Africa seen such commitment from both players and sponsors. The level of success the Huawei Free Fire Showdown resulted in has paved the way for esports in South Africa to be taken more seriously by consumers and big brands alike. This industry is growing, thanks to Huawei. Their support has shown the integrity and power of esports, specifically mobile gaming, in South Africa. Huawei made a bold move, taking a chance on esports, and Mettlestate could not be more proud of what we, with Huawei, pulled off.”
The Huawei Free Fire Showdown was a great way to ring in the end of 2021. But fear not, gamers. 2022 will hold even more exciting opportunities. We’ll see you in the New Year!
