Twitter ‘Rate Limit Exceeded’ Message Explained

Many users across several countries, including South Africa, have reported issues with accessing Twitter this afternoon/evening.

“Rate Limit Exceeded” and “#TwitterDown” seem to be the two top trending topics Twitter at this moment in time.

Users have reported that their feeds weren’t loading whilst others indicated that an error message saying, “Rate limit exceeded. Please wait a few moments then try again.”

A few hours after users began reporting the problems, Elon Musk tweeted that the site had applied temporary limits “to address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation.”

His tweet mentions that verified accounts are limited to reading 6,000 posts a day while unverified accounts are limited to just 600. New unverified accounts are at 300 posts a day.
