The Sony PlayStation 5 or PS5 may release sooner than you think… actually it could even be out before the end of 2018.
Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong has thrown in his prediction which was cited in a Wall Street Journal report on Sony’s recent financial earnings where it was announced that the company shipped 60 million PS4s.
In the past, Thong had made very accurate predictions with regards to the release the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, which is why his comments this time around is valued very highly.
Even though at the moment, this is quite premature. The reason behind this is that the PS4 Pro just released in 2016 which saw the launch of a new console, belonging to the same generation as the PS4 as well as taking into consideration of how well the PS4 is selling, tracking in line with Sony’s most successful console, the PS2.
In the last financial year as per its latest earnings report, Sony shipped 20 million PS4s while ending the 2015 financial year at 40 million PS4s.
Sony is expecting hardware sales to decline for the full financial year while online digital sales to be more important going forward.
Sony is also planning to move another 18 million consoles in the coming year. The PlayStation business has reported profits at its highest since 1998 of 136 billion JPY ($1.2 billion).
