Held every two years during the month of October, the Johannesburg International Motor Show is a magnificent manifestation of the far-reaching influence and strength of the South African Motor Industry. It goes without saying that it is the largest automotive event in Southern Africa, and it runs in conjunction with two additional, vitally important shows, The Johannesburg Truck & Bus Show and Auto Shop, which is a showcase for our component and aftermarket industry.
This automotive spectacular opens to the public on Friday 18 October and it is expected that Manufacturers will launch, unveil and reveal some 20 new passenger cars during the two media days preceding the Public opening. It is also practice for manufacturers to import bring in some concept cars to show future technology in development.
The Johannesburg International Motor Show has earned its place on the International World Motor Show Calendar, thanks to its certification by OICA, the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers. The event is endorsed locally by NAAMSA, NAACAM, Automotive Industry Export Council and the RMI. The National Government of South Africa has given its unmitigated support to the event through its Department of Trade and Industry.
The Johannesburg International Motor Show, often affectionately referred to by industry insiders as “JIMS” has a history extending back to the late 1990s, when it was staged under the Auto Africa banner. After receiving world accreditation from OICA, it was renamed to Johannesburg International Motor Show in line with international practice of naming the show after the host city.
The Johannesburg International Motor Show provides its exhibitor clients with a unique opportunity to communicate their individual brand statements to a visitor profile that includes both industry specialists, as well as the motoring public. At the 2011 show, more than 220 exhibitors were exposed to over 225 000 visitors, as well as massive media coverage of the event, both locally and internationally.
