SARS 2025 Tax Filing Season: Key Dates, Auto-Assessments, and How to File Online in South Africa

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially announced the opening of the 2025 Tax Filing Season, running from 7 July to 20 October 2025. This period is critical for individual taxpayers, as SARS will be issuing auto-assessments to a large group of taxpayers based on third-party data.

Auto-Assessments: What You Need to Know

Between 7 and 20 July 2025, selected taxpayers will receive auto-assessment notifications via SMS or email. These assessments are generated using data from employers, banks, pension funds, and medical aid schemes, offering a simplified tax experience.

If you’re happy with the auto-assessment, no further action is required. However, if any information is missing or incorrect, you’ll need to amend and submit your return via eFiling or the SARS MobiApp before 20 October 2025.

Refunds due will be paid directly into your bank account within 72 business hours, provided your banking and contact details are accurate. If you owe SARS money, payment can be made via your bank, SARS eFiling, or the MobiApp.

What If You’re Not Auto-Assessed?

If you don’t receive an auto-assessment notification, you’ll need to file manually starting 21 July 2025. This applies mainly to taxpayers with more complex financial situations, additional income streams, or those who wish to claim deductions. Non-provisional taxpayers must file by 20 October 2025, while provisional taxpayers and trusts have until 19 January 2026.

Tips to Prepare

  • Gather all relevant documents (IRP5s, investment certificates, medical aid statements, etc.).
  • Check and update your banking and contact details on SARS eFiling to avoid refund delays.
  • Use SARS digital tools like the MobiApp and eFiling platforms for a secure, efficient process.
  • Avoid branch visits – SARS encourages digital engagement, and if you must visit, book online in advance.

Improved Tech Support for 2025

SARS has bolstered its tech services this season:

  • More responsive interactive channels

  • Extended customer service hours

  • Upgraded online filing systems

  • Secure platforms to protect your information

  • Easy-to-follow video tutorials on the SARS YouTube channel
