The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) is launching a new level of their Secondary Teacher Problem Solving Course. The launch of newly developed GET Level 3 course will take place at the SAMF offices in Pretoria on the 28th and 29th of August 2015.
The course provides a hands-on training of teachers by exposing them to a variety of problem solving strategies and techniques. It is expected that this training will enhance the problem solving skills of teachers. Since 2002 SAMF has trained over 2700 teachers at different levels, namely GET level 1 and 2 and FET level 1.
“We are excited about our new GET level 3 course, which is specifically aimed at round 3 problems of the SAMO. We hope that it will result in an improved appreciation for solving mathematical problems on the part of the learners and an improved performance by learners in the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO),” explains Professor Johann Engelbrecht, Executive Director of the SAMF.A total of 60 secondary mathematics teachers whose schools have participated in the Final Round ofthe SAMOhave been invited to the launch.
The GET level 3 course is sponsored by the NSTF’s proSET (professionals in Science, Engineering and Technology), a sector of the NSTF consisting of professional bodies and learned societies.
“Problem solving skills are critical for success in mathematics as well as many other disciplines and careers. NSTF/proSET is proud to be associated with the excellent work SAMF is doing in training teachers to train learners in these key skills,” explained Jansie Niehaus , Executive Director of the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF).
After the launch teachers who have successfully completed the lower levels of the course will be eligible to apply for the GET Level 3 course which will be available in DVD version only. The DVD course which costs R70 per teacher contains the DVD, a workbook, set of notes, one assignment and one test.
