GreenpowerZA exhibited at the Annual Green Youth Indaba on 29 and 30 June 2016. With approximately 500+ youth attending the Indaba at the Innovation Hub in Pretoria. GreenpowerZA aims to inspire learners to take control of their future by providing them with the opportunity to engage with their careers through practical engineering projects.
GreenpowerZA is an engineering challenge. GreenpowerZA provides a platform where learners can design, build and race a single seat electric car. We use the excitement of motorsport to inspire learners from primary school through to high school to excel in the subject areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The project also provides career guidance in the areas of project management, design & build, race execution & safety, marketing & PR and finance & sponsorship. GreenpowerZA links education, industry and community through hands-on engineering projects.
“Today’s learners are privileged to have projects like GreenpowerZA and to receive awareness of the career opportunities in the engineering sector at such an early age,” said Derrick Chaane from the South African National Space Agency (SANSA). With South Africa’s huge engineering shortage and high unemployment level, GreenpowerZA aims to mobilise learners by educating them with skills and expertise that will contribute to the growth of the South African economy. GreenpowerZA is inspiring the engineers of tomorrow, today.
With learners as young as seven years of age participating in the GreenpowerZA challenge, we shift their minds from ‘I have to be good at maths’ to ‘I want to be good in maths’. GreenpowerZA want to inspire the youth to not only believe in their own future but to take charge of their generation’s future by making them see how today’s school work fits into their future careers.
GreenpowerZA has an annual race day event. Schools from various provinces are coming together to finish the GreenpowerZA challenge off with a bang. The participating schools will bring their single seater electric car and race on a local track. The GreenpowerZA race day will be held at the Red Star Raceway in Delmas on 22 October 2016.
