Lights, Camera….Action! Grade 11 & 12 first-language speakers are surely in for a treat when they witness Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Othello which has returned to the Playhouse Drama Theatre from 18 February – 15 March 2013, presented by Think Theatre. Directed by leading theatre star, Clare Mortimer, the production offers a valuable learning aid for secondary school learners studying Shakespeare’s stage tragedy as a set work.
I, myself have seen this production this year and all I can say is that it’s absolutely mind-blowing!!! If you really want to know what a top-notch play is, then this is exactly what you’re looking for!
With the enthusiastic students as well as teachers from outlying areas of Durban coming through, leaving early morning just to witness this production, not only the excitement on their faces when they enter the theatre but the eagerness wanting to know whats going to happen next is just absolutely amazing!
Playing to packed houses during its previous seasons, Think Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy has garnered ongoing critical acclaim. With its pivotal themes of racism, love, jealousy and betrayal, the play is perhaps more relevant to today’s audiences than ever before with an expected total of between 19000 – 20000 students that will view this production.
Loyiso MacDonald reprises his portrayal of the title role, last seen in 2011 before he took up TV roles in Isidingo and Those Who Can’t. Robyn McHarry again appears as Desdemona following her role debut last year, and Clinton Small’s Durban Theatre Award-winning performance as the villainous Iago can once more be appreciated.
Mortimer returns to the role of Iago’s wife, Emilia, in an accomplished cast that again features Michael Gritten, Daisy Spencer, Marc Kay, Adam Doré, Bryan Hiles, Rowan Bartlett and Darren King.
Schools performances of Othello are at 9:00 and 12:00 daily, Mondays to Fridays.
