Apple apologizes for intentionally slowing older iPhones, drops price of battery replacements

Apple has recently been facing lawsuits and consumer outrage after it had stated that it slowed older iPhones with flagging batteries. Apple is now slashing prices for battery replacements and is set to change its software to allow users to see whether their phone battery is good.

Apple apologised over its handling of the battery issue and said it would make a number of changes for customers to acknowledge their loyalty and regain the trust of anyone who may have doubted Apple’s intentions.

This move has was originally made to address concerns about the quality and durability of its products at a time when it is charging $999 (approximately R 14,000) for its latest flagship device, the iPhone X.

The company said it would cut the price of an out-of-warranty battery replacement from $79 (approximately R 1,100) to $29 (approximately R 450) for an iPhone 6 or later, starting next month. Apple will also be updating its iOS operating system to give users the privilege of viewing whether their battery is in poor health and is affecting the phone’s performance.

Apple has stated that the problem was that aging lithium batteries delivered power unevenly, which could cause iPhones to shutdown unexpectedly to protect the delicate circuits inside.

That question that many are still asking is “Was it really the battery or did Apple purposely slow down older phones to encourage customers to buy newer iPhone models?” Hmm…
