Apple will finally make OS X Mavericks available to the public starting today. Version 10.9 of OS X will work with Apple iMac, Macbook, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro computers that are currently compatible with OS X Mountain Lion. And if you’re wondering about price, Apple is giving away Mavericks for the very affordable price of free.
Apple claims Mavericks introduces over 200 new features to Mac OS X. Among the additions are iBooks, Maps, a more social-leaning version of Safari, and online password saving program iCloud Keychain.
While many had expected Apple to release Mavericks for around $20, the company feels gratis OS upgrades–similar to how Cupertino handles iOS–are the way to go.
“We want every Mac user to experience the latest features, the most advanced technologies, and the strongest security,” said Apple’s senior vice president of software, Craig Federighi. “We believe the best way to do this is to begin a new era of personal computing software where OS upgrades are free.”
The free upgrade is available to any Mac OS X user running at least Snow Leopard or higher.
