Microsoft Agrees to a 10-Year Deal: Call of Duty Stays on PlayStation After Activision Blizzard Merger

The gaming industry witnessed a whirlwind of speculation and uncertainty following Microsoft’s announcement of the proposed $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. One of the biggest concerns raised by gamers was whether the immensely popular Call of Duty franchise would remain available on PlayStation consoles. Amidst these anxieties, recent reports reveal that Microsoft and Sony have signed a “binding agreement” that ensures Call of Duty will stay on PlayStation even after the merger’s completion.

Microsoft and Sony have reached a groundbreaking 10-year agreement to retain Call of Duty on PlayStation consoles. The agreement puts an end to a prolonged dispute between the two tech giants that had been ongoing since Microsoft’s announcement of the proposed acquisition in January 2022.

Sony had been vocal in its concerns over the potential impact of the Microsoft-Activision deal on Call of Duty’s availability on PlayStation. However, the “binding agreement” now assures that the franchise will remain accessible to PlayStation players, offering them continuity and stability in their gaming experience. Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Xbox head, expressed his delight in a tweet, stating that they are “pleased to announce that Microsoft and PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.”

The merger between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard raised concerns about competition and possible harm to consumers. To address these concerns, Microsoft had previously signed licensing agreements with other industry players like Nintendo and Nvidia. These agreements ensured that Microsoft would not restrict Activision titles, including Call of Duty, from users on rival platforms and consoles. The new agreement with Sony now further solidifies Microsoft’s commitment to maintaining a diverse gaming ecosystem with access to popular titles on multiple platforms.

While the binding agreement is a significant milestone, Microsoft still faces regulatory scrutiny, particularly from the UK government’s Competition and Market Authority (CMA). The company aims to close the merger with Activision by July 18, 2023, adhering to the contractual deadline. Successfully navigating the regulatory landscape will be crucial for Microsoft to finalize the acquisition and fully integrate Activision Blizzard into its portfolio.
