For many people, Harry Potter has been a pivotal part of their childhood. With a wistful desire to have their own wands and an immense yearning for that special letter, sealed and delivered by an owl, instructing you to platform 9 3/4 to board the Hogwarts Express on September 1st.
Thus far, the most recent opportunity to delve into the Wizarding World was way back in 2012, in the form of Wonderbook: Book of Spells (Sony PlayStation 3).
Six years later, Potterheads around the globe are rejoicing. 2018 brings with it two games that are sure to “Bewitch the mind and ensnare the sense”, as Professor Snape would put it.
Developed by Jam City to be released by Portkey Games (Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment Harry Potter-focused label), comes Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, a game for Android and iOS.
Hogwarts Mystery has been based on the widely-acclaimed book series by beloved author, J.K Rowling. The role-playing game will live alongside the magical universe that we all know and love, allowing players the opportunity to live their own Hogwarts experience.
The game takes place in the timeframe between Harry Potter’s birth and his enrollment at Hogwarts, so while he will be alive at the same time as your character, The Boy Who Lived will not get in the way of your magical experience. While many would be disappointed to not find their beloved Harry, Ron and Hermione in the game, there’s no denying that this game will still enthrall many a magical enthusiast.
Alongside Nymphadora Tonks and Bill Weasley, you get to interact with some of the most memorable characters in the series; the lovable half-giant Hagrid, Potions Master Professor Snape and of course, steely Professor McGonagal.
Each avatar gets sorted into one of the four prestigious houses of Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. You get to choose a pet ( is there a rat, cat, owl or toad that you’re particularly fond of? )and learn how to cast a number of spells in the exciting classes that we’ve all longed to be a part of. Players also embark on relationship quests and explore the countless mysteries of the bewitching castle. Room of requirement, anyone?
Niantic, the developer of Pokemon Go allows us to immerse ourselves in magic even more with the second Harry Potter game to enchant Potterheads this year.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will allow you to delve even deeper into the magical universe through the use of augmented reality technology. The Harry Potter universe will be superimposed into the real world, placing magical artefacts and creatures around your neighbourhood.
