The pollution created on our roads is truly astronomical.
As one of the major contributors towards ozone depletion, carbon monoxide from vehicles is a serious cause for concern, with more and more changes occurring in the environment, at a pace that is far too rapid.
Goodyear may have a way to counter this.
Their latest concept wheel, the Oxygen Tyre, could produce almost 3000 tonnes of oxygen in a year ( in a city the size of Paris with 2.5 million vehicles), and remove more than 4000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Oxygen Tyres have moss in the sidewall, which converts carbon dioxide into oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. They channel moisture from the road up to the plants, which can absorb up to 26 times their weight in water. With the Sun serving as the energy source, the vegetation will be kept alive and clean the air while in use.
Energy generated by the process of photosynthesis will power the on board artificial intelligence and electronics, allowing instant communication with other vehicles.
It is projected that by 2050, more than 70% of the world’s population will be living in cities, increasing the demand for transportation and vehicles. While this increase could spell disaster for many regions already inundated with air pollution, the Oxygen Tyre holds the promise of being a breath of fresh air.
