About Revlimit Racing

Their team is is made out of 2 very fast online racers. Jason, who has been racing online for more than a year now, and one of the fastest drivers on Gran Turismo 6. He’ll be making my way to rage this year for the DGL finals. His team mate is also an ex open wheel champion and also a Gran Turismo 6 driver who will be going to Rage this year. His name is Steven Pelser.

The team name, ofcourse, is Revlimit Racing as Revlimit Speed Shop SA are their Title sponsor. Their team principle Shaun Britz, is the owner of the company and looking forward to be a part of online motorsport.

The second sponsor is Dynacor IT & Gaming. They are a computer hardware and software company based in Cape town looking to strive in selling the best quality hardware and software money can buy for a very low price.

This is how the interview went down…

  • What inspires you to do what you are doing?

To become one of the fastest virtual racers in South Africa. But with all the talent out there, it’s easier said than done.

  • How much does this mean to you? Just a hobby?

It is more than a hobby, this is a competitive sport.

  • What game will we be using?

Assetto Corsa www.assettocorsa.net

  • Who are the organizers for the series?

SimeraceSA, http://simracesa.co.za/

  • Is this an annual event?

From the looks of things, SimraceSA will be having a new championship quarterly. In addition to the SS3 series there will also be a SS1, and a GT series. For the newcomers who do not yet have sponsorship, there is a Clubmans Cup GT series. More information can be obtained from Jason Holden Jones, owner of SimraceSA

  • How long have you guys been racing online?

Jason – I’ve been racing online simulators for just over a year now. The thing that attracted me the most to getting a proper rig was GT Academy. My first races online where on Gran Turismo 5 at the end of it’s great life span, which was taken over by Gran Turismo 6. That’s when I decided to participate in the Telkom Gaming League to race against SA fastest online racers. My speed has always been a mystery, as I still don’t know where I got the talent from, but I use it to it’s fullest potential.

Steven – I started racing online in 2007, the South African internet was not as common as it is now so prior to 2007 it was LAN parties and single player mode. However, my first racing game (if you can call it that) was “Testdrive” which was released in 1987, the title is older than some of the SS3 competitors : ) The first online racing simulator that I used was Live For Speed (LFS) where I raced against some formidable opponents, Daryn Lobb, Zaahir Esse, Charles McEwen to name a few. I am also very active in Gran Turismo 6 and have owned and completed all of the GT titles, I own and run the GT forum, www.granturismo.co.za.

  • What is our goal in the series and for the future?

JasonMy goal is to have fun on the track and enjoy the great company with an awesome community called Sim Race SA. But on the serious side, my priority is to progress from SS3 to SS1. The big stage is where we all want to be, but working hard for it is what matters most. I would love to take my form from Gran Turismo into Assetto Corsa, but it wont be easy. It’s like comparing apples with chocolate cake. Every one loves chocolate cake!

Steven – In this series we plan to settle into the open wheel cars. We are confident that we will do well in the series, a top 3 team position is within reach. We have both been competing in local sim racing for a while and know who the competition is, from Jason’s past performances a title is not out of the question.

Depending on the quality of the series and the competition, we may opt for another series in SS3 or move up to SS1. There also may be plans to run in both SS and GT, where the GT series using the GT3 race cars.

  • What excites you most about motorsport sim-racing?

Jason – Sim racing is a unique form of gaming. It takes a very skilled being to master the art of racing, and we as normal people get the opportunity to experience it in the comfort of our own homes, as the simulation racing games that have been released in the past decade on both consoles and PC have been really close to the real thing regarding physics and graphics. Being a F1 fanatic, my heart went soft when Sim Race SA announced a single seater series on one of the most advanced simulators I’ve come across in the current generation of gaming. And what’s great about the thought of racing online is that you don’t only share the same track as the rest, but also the same passion for the art of sim racing.

Steven – Growing up in my era we played with Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars, later in years you get to buy your very first car. This may not be your dream car but it is no matter it is a car. You are mobile, you learn to drive and discover the engineering behind the concept. Very soon you discover that the average car on a public road is not used to even 60% of its full potential. Some people will never realize this while others push the limits. Once you pass that 90% potential you start learning a new set of skills, the sport becomes dangerous and it has a legacy. You further envelope yourself into the engineering, the physics and the aesthetics and before you know it you are a motorsport enthusiast. You track the local scene, you watch all the F1 and MotoGP, and you become a supporter. You know your favorite drivers by name and there competition. Sarel van der Merwe, Ben Morganrood, Jean Alesi, Randi Mamola, Max Biaggi are some that come to mind.

As technology progressed the once unaffordable world of motor racing now became an option as a computer game. It has even progressed from there to a Racing Simulator, force feedback steering, motion tracking and motion simulation. All you need is a PC or Console, a force feedback wheel and you are set to drive some of the legendary cars and tracks from the past. Driving a 1970 DeTomasso Pantera around the 1979 Kyalami Curcuit or a 1967 Lotus 49 around the 1966 Monza Curcuit is something you can today only experience in a racing simulator. You can do this from your lounge (man cave) competing with local or international racers and sim racers for at a reasonable cost.

  • What kind of setup are we using?

The SS3 car, the Tatuus FA01 is a high down force open wheel layout. The car has a decent amount of setup options. Tire pressure, gear ratios, ride height, camber, toe angle, spring rate, down force, slow and fast dampers, very similar to what you would find on a F1 type car. Each track will require a qualification and a race setup so there will be a lot of testing and changes for each event during the 3 month championships.

  • What is your message to other young enthusiastic speed lovers?

Jason – I share the same passion for speed as the rest of the speed lovers all around the world, but I experience it in the safest way possible – in my bed room where I have the luxury to have a reset button. Life doesn’t give you that luxury! Think before you drive, and always wear you seat belt. It’s there for a reason.

Steven – Keep it off the streets and don’t drink and drive … ever. The local tracks have track days where you can experience and enjoy your car or bike at high speed in a controlled environment. If you however want to enjoy the thrills of racing without having to worry about the financial impact of dumping the car into the wall then join one of the local forums for some adrenaline filled wheel to wheel virtual racing.
