On 21 July 2025, FlySafair pilots represented by the Solidarity union began strike action over a wage dispute. The airline operated a reduced schedule and cancelled around 12% of its domestic flights, affecting hundreds of travellers nationwide.
Pilots are demanding a 10.5% base salary increase plus bonuses and enhanced flight pay, which they say equates to a 20.1% total uplift. FlySafair offered a 5.7% base increase (1.5% above inflation) and a flight-pay bonus, amounting to an 11.29% total package. Beyond pay, pilots seek roster flexibility and improved rest allowances.
After miners walked off the job, FlySafair imposed a seven-day lockout on striking pilots, prompting the union to extend its action to two weeks. Despite the lockout, over half of the 310-strong pilot corps remained on duty, allowing a limited flight schedule to continue.
Approximately 12% of flights were cancelled at short notice. Affected passengers received SMS alerts and were able to:
- Contact FlySafair’s customer support for rebookings or refunds
- Amend bookings without change fees
- Seek assistance at airport service desks for travel alternatives
These measures aim to reduce inconvenience as negotiations proceed.
Conciliation talks at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) are underway. Solidarity warns disruptions could last up to two weeks if no urgent resolution emerges, while FlySafair expects normal operations to resume once mediation begins and crew availability improves.
With FlySafair carrying about 60% of domestic passengers, a prolonged strike could drive up fares, strain slot allocations at major airports, and test passenger confidence in low-cost carriers.
