When it comes to the sports genre, a lot of people have a distinct preference for console gaming. Big, beautiful gameplay, modern graphics, and conventional controllers make for the best possible simulation of actual sports, and can leave gamers feeling as if they’re in full control of their favorite athletes and teams. At the same time though, some of these games have gotten a little bit repetitive over the years, and while they still top all comers in pure gameplay, the mobile sports gaming category undeniably offers more variety.
So, from cartoonish arcade games to realistic simulations and everything in between, we’re taking a look at some of the very best sports games you can download on your phone in 2019.
Released in its original form back in 1993, NBA Jam has been a beloved arcade classic for decades now. It’s back in a delightful way on mobile devices, and while it’s not free to download, it also doesn’t bug you with ads and in-app purchases. The app version packs the same high-flying, ludicrous two-on-two basketball action, and allows you to play with a mix of classic and modern players.
FIFA may have Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) beat when it comes to console gaming supremacy, but there’s a legitimate argument to be made that PES 2019 is better on mobile. Both are robust games full of real players and teams and loaded with fun game modes. Both also look quite nice at this point. But in terms of control and pure gameplay, PES 2019 is the best mobile version of a console soccer game out there.
MLB 9 Innings 19
In the baseball category, too, there are several good options to choose from. But we like MLB 9 Innings 19 for two reasons. One is that the gameplay is simple in a very fun way, allowing you to really feel contact when you hit the ball. The other is that this game does a nice job of updating rosters and supplying you with new players according to real-life transactions. This is particularly useful for 2019 given that the current season has brought about some of the best and most well-rounded baseball teams we’ve seen in a decade. The World Series odds favor the LA Dodgers, Houston Astros, and New York Yankees, as of this writing, and all three – in their up-to-date forms in this game – are an absolute blast to play with.
Tennis World Open 2019
Tennis gaming has always been a little bit of a problem for fans of the actual sport who would like to see a high-quality professional simulation. For whatever reason, there just hasn’t ever been a single game that roped in enough real players, venues, and events. Tennis World Open 2019 falls short as well, but not by nearly as much as most of its counterparts. The game contains more than 25 professional players, real venues, and close imitations of real tournaments. It’s also sharp in appearance, and has mechanics and gameplay that look a lot more like real tennis than the average video game. Again, it’s not perfect, but Tennis World Open 2019 is arguably the very best tennis game on any device right now.
Flick Kick Football Legends
Flick Kick Football Legends was an expansion of an existing series when it debuted a few years ago, and it’s still one of the most enjoyable sports games out there. Almost part cartoon, part game, it plants you in a ‘70s-ish era of European soccer and challenges you to build a team to compete. You can sign new and better players as you progress, make various decisions as a manager, and learn to dominate through swipe- and click-based gameplay. The game can be a little bit aggravating through its various pushes for in-app purchases, but it’s worth it in the end. It’s just a joy to play.
