Apple Unveils Share Item Location Feature on iOS 18.2

Apple has recently announced a groundbreaking feature called Share Item Location, set to be available with the upcoming iOS 18.2 update. This innovative addition to Apple’s Find My network aims to assist users in locating and recovering lost or misplaced items more efficiently.

With the Share Item Location feature, users can generate a link in the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac for an item marked as lost. This link can be shared with trusted individuals or airline employees, redirecting them to a website with an interactive map showing the item’s location. The map updates automatically with new location information and timestamps.

Apple has placed several privacy-centric limitations on the new feature. Recipients must authenticate their identity through an Apple Account or partner email address to view the link, and access is limited to a small number of people. This ensures that user privacy is maintained throughout the tracking process.

Apple has partnered with over 15 airlines globally, including Air Canada, Air New Zealand, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic, to support the Share Item Location feature. These airlines will accept Find My item locations as part of their customer service process for locating lost items. Additionally, the feature integrates with SITA’s WorldTracer system, used by over 500 airlines and 2,800 airports worldwide.

The Share Item Location feature is designed to make travel more seamless and stress-free. By allowing users to share the location of lost items with airlines, it helps in quickly locating and recovering misplaced luggage or belongings. This feature is especially useful for frequent travelers who often face the challenge of lost or delayed baggage.

The Share Item Location feature is currently available in the iOS 18.2 Public Beta and will be released to all users with the public update of iOS 18.2 in December 2024. This update will be compatible with iPhone X and later models.
