WhatsApp Introduces Ads in Status, Channel Subscriptions, and New Business Features

WhatsApp has announced a significant update that will introduce advertisements in Status, paid channel subscriptions, and promoted channels within its Updates tab. This marks a major shift for the messaging platform, which has largely remained ad-free since its launch.

The new monetization features will be confined to the Updates tab, which houses both Channels and Status. WhatsApp has assured users that personal chats, calls, and group messages will remain ad-free and end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp’s Status feature, similar to Instagram Stories, will now include advertisements. Businesses can promote their products and services, allowing users to tap on ads to start a chat with the advertiser.

WhatsApp Channels, which allow users to follow public updates from organizations and influencers, will now offer premium content through paid subscriptions. Channel admins can provide exclusive posts to subscribers, creating a new revenue stream.

Businesses and content creators can now pay for increased visibility in WhatsApp’s Channel directory, helping them reach a wider audience.

WhatsApp has emphasized that personal messages, calls, and group memberships will not be used for ad targeting. Instead, ads will be tailored based on basic information such as location, language, and activity within the Updates tab. Users will also have the ability to manage ad preferences, hide ads, or report them.

South Africa’s digital economy is growing rapidly, and these new features could provide local businesses with powerful marketing tools. Companies can use WhatsApp Status ads to engage customers, while paid channel subscriptions offer a way for influencers and brands to monetize their content.
