Founded in July 2003 by Sean McCarthy, the SMG Group has grown significantly from its original 2 dealerships, SMG Durban and SMG Pietermaritzburg, to now comprise of 9 dealerships, including six BMW dealerships and one MINI dealership. These include their Approved Repair Centre in Marseilles Drive, Briardene, which opened in September 2006, and their state-of-the-art SMG Cape Town, situated at the entrance of the Canal Walk Shopping Centre, which opened in February 2009. SMG South Coast commenced trading in July 2011, and SMG Rocks, KZN’s first exclusive MINI dealership, opened in December 2012.
SMG Durban is managed by Dealer Principal Trevor Meyer, and their South Coast dealership is in the capable hands of Darren Staats, while their funky SMG Rocks has Dealer Principal Kesin Munian at the helm. SMG Cape Town is ably run by Mark Ross, and now their latest member of the family, SMG Umhlanga, is managed by Stephen Searle.
