Our generation is one absolutely spoiled for choice when it comes to watching TV. With a new season of all your favorite shows premiering on a regular basis, there’s always something great to feast your eyes on while you enjoy your supper. Even though you should all be sitting at the table with your family and discuss the day’s happenings, Is that still a thing?
When you binge watch the latest season of Game of Thrones, it’s easy to look past the visual brilliance of dragons, fierce battles, ice zombies, battles with dragons, you get the picture. But what actually goes into making all these unbelievable fantasy elements seem so real? Well besides the great story-telling, cinematography, music etc, these kind of shows always rely on breathtaking CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) to hit home with viewers. The show fully embraces the the ridiculousness of the comic books with their VFX, I’m talking Time Travel, super sonic speed, multiple universes, a telepathic super gorilla and King Shark. King Shark!
You’d expect to see stuff like that at the cinema watching a 100 million dollar movie. But Nope, you get to see it on a Wednesday, On TV. With the advancement of technology and software, digital artists are allowed to express themselves and create these aesthetic masterpieces within months and on a TV budget. The process can be is painstakingly slow but you can’t compromise on attention to detail. Lighting, camera angles, textures and reflections, 3D modeling, animation and much more takes a whole team working in tandem to make the finished product something special. Like I mentioned before, we’re spoiled. As viewers we demand the best and if a something looks out if place, it immediately snaps us out of Winterfell or Central City and back into our lounges. And sure, over the years there has been some terrible, almost laughable CGI. But if it enhances the storytelling without being too distracting then it’s job done.
