It’s not groundbreaking news that robots are taking over our jobs, this has been happening since the dawn of the industrial age. Most factory jobs that humans used to rely on for bread and butter have slowly been taken over by automated circuits and steel. They operate at extreme efficiency, increase productivity and work with minimal room for error . They also don’t strike and burn cars on the street if working conditions become too demanding. These technological breakthroughs are part of of the industrial evolution and move society into the future but lets take a look at some of the jobs you may not have thought about.

Many of Amazon’s warehouses have a fleet of little orange robots on wheels that move packages from shelves to the staff which in turn saves them walking distances of up to 33km a day. Another new initiative is their ‘Prime Air’ Service which will see products delivered to your door. Their website states “Amazon Prime Air is a future service that will deliver packages up to 2.5 KGs in 30 minutes or less using small drones. Flying under 120 meters and weighing less than 25 kilograms, Prime Air vehicles will take advantage of sophisticated “sense and avoid” technology, as well as a high degree of automation, to safely operate beyond the line of sight to distances of 16km or more.”
The routine tasks of farming have seen a a lot of technology over the years from self-driving tractors, cutting,pruning and harvesting have all been automated. There’s also a wine-bot which pull up weeds near the plant base. You might have heard of the ‘Roomba’ which is a floor cleaning robot that zooms around floors in your home vacuuming up dirt, over 10 million units are already in use.
After getting on board the Royal Caribbean’s Quantum, you will be served your drink by N1-C and B1-O. The ships’s dancing robots with a knowledge base of 300 cocktails and the ability to make them in seconds with no need to tip!
OK now lets look at some of the crazy fun stuff! One company that is pushing the boundaries of how a robot can move and the human-like tasks it can perform is ‘Boston Dynamics’. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Google, Inc. They began as a “spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where National Academy of Engineering member Marc Raibert and his colleagues first developed robots that ran and maneuvered like animals.” They’ve developed around 9 robots ranging from military use to testing chemical protection clothing. I think we can expect cyborg assassins from the future looking for Sarah Connor pretty soon.
