Augmented reality and AI could improve online dating

According to Tinder’s CEO Sean Rad, soon pointing your smartphone at a stranger might help you find love. Speaking at the Startup Grind Global Conference in California, Mr. Rad speculated on what dating might look like in the future. He noted that in five years’ time, people could use an augmented reality app like Pokemon Go to find a couple.

New dating apps are popping up each month, and the popularity of exotic online Russian dating sites keeps growing. Online dating is gradually becoming a significant part of modern day life, so introducing of cutting-edge technologies to it is just a matter of time.

The idea of such app was inspired by so-called “traffic light parties” which are popular among students. Women and man wear green, amber, or red to show their relationship status. Those who wear orange and green are letting others know that they are open to new relationships, while people wearing red are indicating that they’re not ready for new encounters.

Augmented reality technology overlays digital images on the real world. Singles could use augmented reality for sending out virtual colored signals to people near them. And AI voice assistants could function as virtual matchmakers, matching strangers according to their likes and dislikes. This way they could find out whether a stranger is in relationships or not without talking to them. According to Mr. Rad, that will bring online dating to the next step, as the technology gets closer to our senses and our eyes. With augmented reality, such experience could happen in real time, in the room.

The Tinder app already has an algorithm that suggests matches for you by analyzing such indicators as interests and location in common, but Rad has plans to use artificial intelligence that could pick specific dates with friends of friends or neighbors.

Tinder’s CEO sees a future where the app’s users could, for example, look at a party through the camera of a smartphone, with an overlaid interface identifying single people among guests.

Many Tinder users would appreciate an AI voice assistant suggesting dates possibilities. Right now, the app shows users pictures of people looking for a companion, and then they either swipe right to find out more about the suggested person or left to reject them and keep searching. According To the company, every day, users make about 1.4bn swipes, which results in nearly 26 million daily matches.

Tinder relies on its ability to remain the number one app for finding potential dates and getting couples into relationships. Implementing of augmented reality technology will ensure that it stays the best online dating service.
