Soap operas have an enduring appeal across the globe, commanding loyal audiences who eagerly await the next instalment of a glimpse into the lives of their favourite characters.
Originating in 1930s America, these domestic dramas gained their name as they were sponsored by manufacturers of soap and other household products. While US dramas have tended to focus on the lives of the rich, here in the UK it is those that have concerned themselves with ordinary people that have thrived.

Coronation Street
The world’s longest-running soap opera, Coronation Street was first broadcast in 1960. Set in the fictional Salford town of Weatherfield, the soap concerns itself with the lives of a group of working class characters. Much of the action takes place within the street’s terraced houses, café, factory, newsagents and the Rovers Return pub. Coronation Street is known for its strong characters, humour and down-to-earth northern working class feel.
Eastenders
When Eastenders hit our screens in 1985 it quickly won a place in the public affections, drawing in audiences of up to 30 million people. This London-based soap takes places in Albert Square in the fictional London Borough of Walford. Centred around a culturally diverse population with a number of strong family units, the soap is known for tackling hard-hitting issues such as domestic abuse and drug addiction.
Emmerdale
First broadcast in 1972, this soap is centred in a fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales and, until 1988, took seasonal breaks. Originally focusing on Emmerdale Farm, the show’s focus moved on to the nearby village. Known for its dramatic storylines which have included a plane crash, bus crash and house fire, viewing figures remain constant, with some 9.2 million people watching the 40th anniversary live episode in 2012.
Hollyoaks
Originally devised by Phil Redmond, who was also responsible for the defunct Brookside, Hollyoaks is geared towards a younger audience. Set in the fictional suburb of Chester, its mains characters are typically teenagers and young adults. Storylines have included financial problems, suicide and relationship issues.
