The Hollywoodbets Durban July Preview Fashion Show 2025 is set to dazzle Durban on Friday, 27 June 2025, at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping’s Great Hall. As the curtain-raiser to Africa’s most iconic horse racing and fashion event, this year’s preview show promises a bold celebration of local creativity, youth empowerment, and the growing synergy between fashion and technology.
Gateway’s newly revamped Great Hall will transform into a “Theatre of Fashion,” offering the public a front-row seat to one of the most anticipated fashion showcases in the country. With multi-level balconies, immersive lighting, and a red carpet welcome, the venue sets the stage for a night where style meets spectacle.
This year’s theme, “Marvels of Mzansi,” invites designers to explore South Africa’s cultural richness – from its landscapes and cuisine to its music and traditional ceremonies. The result? A runway filled with garments that are not only visually stunning but deeply rooted in identity and storytelling.
At the heart of the show is the Young Designer Award, presented by Durban Fashion Fair. Ten finalists – selected from over 130 student designers across KwaZulu-Natal – will present original creations inspired by the theme. These rising stars hail from institutions such as Durban University of Technology, Lindiwe Khuzwayo Academy of Fashion, and Umgungundlovu TVET College.
Their designs reflect a new generation of South African creatives who are blending heritage with innovation, often incorporating sustainable materials, digital fabrication, and even wearable tech elements into their work.
The show will also feature collections from six of South Africa’s most celebrated designers, including Kathrin Kidger, Zarth Designs, and the team behind Khosi Nkosi. These industry veterans will be joined by nine Durban Fashion Fair “Rising Stars,” whose bold, experimental pieces are redefining Afro-futurism and contemporary African fashion.
Adding to the energy is a live performance by genre-bending musical duo Veranda Panda, with East Coast Radio’s Stacey Norman emceeing the evening.
For a technology-focused audience, the Preview Fashion Show offers more than just aesthetics. Several designers are expected to showcase tech-integrated garments, including 3D-printed accessories, smart textiles, and augmented reality styling. Gateway’s “Portal to Fashion” campaign, which runs in parallel, uses digital storytelling, social media activations, and interactive displays to extend the fashion experience beyond the runway.
This convergence of fashion and tech reflects a broader trend in South Africa’s creative economy – where innovation is not just about gadgets, but about reimagining how we express identity, culture, and community.
