The wait is almost over for the Class of 2025. As the Department of Basic Education (DBE) prepares to conclude the academic cycle, thousands of South African learners are looking for the most reliable and efficient ways to access their National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. In an increasingly digital world, there are now more ways than ever to get your marks instantly, ranging from traditional school visits to high-speed mobile apps and USSD services. This guide covers everything you need to know about the 2025 Matric results release, ensuring you are ready when the clock strikes 06:00 on the big day.
When are the 2025 Matric Results Being Released?
The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, will officially announce the national results on Monday, 12 January 2026. This announcement typically provides a high-level overview of the country’s performance, including the national pass rate and the top-achieving provinces and learners. However, students will have to wait until the following morning to access their individual marks.
Individual results for the 2025 NSC exams will be available to candidates on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. From 06:00 AM, digital platforms will go live, and learners can begin checking their status. For those who prefer the traditional route, results will also be available at schools and exam centers later that morning, usually from 08:00 AM. It is important to remember that while digital results are convenient, the official Statement of Results must still be collected from your school.
How to Check Your Results Online and via Mobile
In the spirit of South Africa’s growing tech landscape, the most popular way to check results is through digital channels. The Department of Basic Education website is the primary hub for online results. By visiting the official DBE portal and entering your 13-digit ID number and examination number, you can view your personal statement of marks immediately. Be prepared for high traffic on the site, which can occasionally lead to slow loading times during the first hour of release.
For those without a stable internet connection, SMS and USSD services remain the most accessible tools. To receive your results via SMS, you can register by texting your ID number and exam number to 35658. Once the results are released, you will receive an automated message with your marks. Alternatively, you can use the USSD code *120*35658# and follow the prompts. Note that these mobile services usually carry a small nominal fee (typically R1.50) and may require you to have a small amount of airtime on your device.
Popular Third-Party Apps and Portals
- MatricsMate App: Available on both iOS and Android, this app allows you to register your details early and receive a notification the moment your results are processed.
- News Portals: Major South African news sites like News24 and Sowetan Live often host their own search engines where you can enter your exam number to see your status.
- DBE Mobile App: The official DBE app provides a secure and free way to access your NSC results without navigating a web browser.
What to Do After Receiving Your Results
Once you have your results, the next few weeks are critical for administrative follow-ups. If you are unsatisfied with a specific mark or believe there has been a clerical error, you can apply for a re-mark or re-check. The application window for these services opens on 13 January 2026 and closes on 27 January 2026. A re-mark involves a fresh reading of your exam script, while a re-check ensures all marks were added correctly. The results of these applications are expected to be released by 13 March 2026.
If you did not achieve the results you hoped for, remember that there are several second-chance options available. The Second Chance Matric Support Programme offers learners the opportunity to rewrite certain subjects during the May/June 2026 examinations. The closing date to register for these mid-year exams is 6 February 2026. This provides a valuable pathway for learners to improve their results and qualify for university or TVET college entrance later in the year.
