Telkom Mobile’s Sim-Sonke Explained

What is SIM-SONKE?

SIM-SONKE is a new Telkom Mobile Per Second Prepaid tariff plan, it is available only on the Telkom Mobile Network. It is available via participating channels/stores

  • How to check for coverage? Please visit their coverage map, here.
  • No services (calls, sms, MMS and data, voicemail) will be available out of the Telkom Mobile covered areas. To check the Telkom Mobile coverage please go to http://www.telkommobile.co.za/coverage
  • Customers can simply send their street address and suburb or GPS coordinates to 43482, an SMS will be sent back to the customer with results confirming if there is coverage or not. (SMS charged as applicable rates)

How much do I pay for the SIMSOMKE Starter Pack?

  • You will pay R0.99 for the Starter Pack, the pack contains of two SIM cards. These SIM cards should be RICA’d by the subscriber.
  • Should the customer transfer or in any manner provide any of the SIMs to any person other than a family member, the customer shall be obliged to notify Telkom and provide such information in respect of such person to Telkom as per legislative requirements.

Where can I purchase the Telkom Mobile SIM-SONKE TWIN SIM Starter Pack?
SIM-SONKE Starter Pack will be available at participating Shoprite and Checkers stores

How much do I pay on SIM-SONKE?
You pay 29 cents per minute for calls to any Telkom Mobile number
You pay 75 cents per minute to any SA mobile and national land line numbers (Telkom and Neotel)

Where can I purchase Telkom Mobile SIM-SONKE Airtime?

  • At Telkom and 8ta Stores
  • At Participating Dealers
  • At Participating Banks – FNB, NEDBANK, ABSA and Standard Bank
  • Online via Internet Banking

Can I use 8ta Airtime recharge vouchers on SIM-SONKE?
Yes, current 8ta branded airtime recharge vouchers shall be applicable on SIM-SONKE

What do I get if I recharge?
– If you recharge from R5-R19.99, you will get 5 FREE SMSs valid until 23:59:59 on date of recharge
In addition you will qualify for Free Night calls from Telkom Mobile SIM-SONKE number to another SIM-SONKE number. The free calls benefit will be valid from 9pm-6am the following day
– If you recharge with R20 or more you will get 20 Free SMS valid for 7days
In addition you will qualify for Free Night calls from Telkom Mobile SIM-SONKE number to another SIMSOKE number. The free calls benefit will be valid for 7days from date of recharge. (E.g. if you recharge on the 04/06/13 the benefit will be valid from 9pm until the 11/06/13 at 6am)

For Free evening calls promotion

  • If you recharge before 9pm, the benefit starts from the very same day at 9pm.
  • If you recharge after 9pm and before midnight, you will get the benefit immediately.
  • If you recharge after midnight, you will get the benefit from 9pm that evening.
  • The benefit is only for the primary customer who recharged (benefit cannot be transferred with airtime)

When do I receive my free SMSs?
Your free SMSs will be allocated and available immediately after your recharge has been confirmed.

How do I check my airtime balance?
You can check your balance by dialling, *188# and press the accept/dial button.

Can I move from SIM-SONKE to other Telkom Mobile plans?
Yes, you can move from SIM-SONKE to other Telkom Mobile plans. You will lose all your SIM-SONKE benefits.

Do I get double airtime when I recharge?
No

If I migrate from SIM-SONKE, what will happen to my existing airtime Free SMSs and Free calls? Will it be carried over?
Your paid- for airtime, SMS/MMS will be carried over to the new prepaid price plan, however you will lose all the SIM-SONKE benefits. (Free SMS and Free Calls)

Does the SIM-SONKE prepaid plan include the, “send 5 SMSs and get 50 free for that day” promotion?
No, with SIM-SONKE, you earn free SMSs and Free night calls with every recharge of R5 or more.

Can I buy data bundles on SIM-SONKE?
Data bundles shall be excluded from SIM-SONKE, you can use your paid for airtime for calls, SMS/MMS and data.

Can I buy SMS/MMS bundles on SIM-SONKE?
SMS/MMS bundles shall be excluded from SIM-SONKE, you can use your paid for airtime for calls, SMS/MMS and data.

Can I buy BlackBerry Internet Services and BlackBerry Social & Email Plan to use on SIM-SONKE?
No, BlackBerry Internet Services and BlackBerry Social & Email Plan are excluded from SIM-SONKE

Can I do a SIM Swap on SIM-SONKE?
Yes, you will be able to do a SIM Swap.

  • You need to go to any of the Telkom Mobile stores for a SIM Swap.
  • Bring along your South African ID or Passport and proof of residence

Order of Consumption for SMS:
Free SMSs shall be consumed before paid-for SMSs.

Can I make international calls with SIM-SONKE?
Yes, with SIM-SONKE you can make International calls. You will be charged applicable international rates.

Can I make premium rated calls and SMSs with SIM-SONKE?
Yes, your prepaid airtime can be used for SMS, MMS, data and calls. Premium calls will be charged at premium rates and Free calls cannot be used for premium services.

Can I use Multi SIM with SIM-SONKE?
No, SIM-SONKE is not applicable on Multi SIM

Can I transfer airtime?
Yes, you will be able to transfer airtime from you prepaid account, transferred airtime shall not qualify for free benefits. I.e. Free SMS and Free calls.

Promotional Offer:
In addition to the above mentioned terms and conditions the SIM-SONKE product will have additional benefits in the form of a promotion for a limited period. The period will be at the discretion of Telkom Mobile.

Unlimited FREE evening calls promotion: Telkom Mobile SIM-SONKE to Telkom Mobile SIM-SONKE number.
Customers who recharge with R5 will get FREE evening calls to other SIM-SONKE numbers, valid from 9pm until 5:59:59 am the following day

  • Customers who recharge with R20 will get Free evening calls to other SIM-SONKE numbers, valid for 7 days from date of recharge, the benefit will be valid from 9pm and expire on the 8th day at 5:59:59 am
  • If recharge is done before 9pm, the benefit starts from the very same day at 9pm
  • If recharge is done after 9pm before midnight, you will get the benefit immediately.
  • If recharge is done after midnight, you will get the benefit from 9pm that evening.
  • The benefit is only for the primary customer who recharged (benefit cannot be transferred with airtime)
  • All other destinations will be charged at normal calls rates, including all other Telkom Mobile and Telkom Fixed line destinations as well as all other National and International destinations.
  • Any calls that fall outside of the promotional time periods shall be charged at normal rates.
  • Promotional free calls shall have a maximum duration of 1 hour, after which the call will be disconnected. Customers may redial to continue the conversation.
  • Any portion of a free promotional call that exceeds the end of the promotion time window will be charged at standard rates. These calls may not be cut off after 1 hour.
  • Customers will get an announcement at the beginning of promotional free calls.
