Tink Labs – Igniting The Spark In South Africa

Tink Labs, a small technology start-up aimed at providing immediate solutions to the connectivity problems traveller’s face. Their first product is handy, a complete city guide on a smartphone which comes with unlimited international & local calls, unlimited 3G internet and discount deals you can purchase through the phone. You can also tether internet from it (you rent the phone by the day). It means you can tweet pics of what you’re eating, upload pictures of what you’re shopping for (i.e. ‘which one should I buy?!’), video calling your friends back home from the top of a skyscraper or Hong Kong’s Victoria Peak to show them the view, and so on.  Plus no more wifi hunting or monitoring roaming bills when you’re traveling, ever again!

On the tech side they use Android platforms (in HK the Nexus or Galaxy Note, in SNG the Galaxy Note) as it’s best for their own propriety software for the city guide (best of lists, reviews and more on dining, attractions, nightlife, shopping and more), to buy handy discounts through the phone, and for the pre-loaded apps (each market have different pre-loaded apps that best suit visitors in that market). Their CTO is an American ex-Microsoft guy, started and sold a couple of companies (one to Zynga) and worked at Zynga for many years before moving to Tink Labs in Hong Kong.

Right now it’s available in Singapore and Hong Kong, and I know Singaore is a great shopping destination and Hong Kong is a favourite destination for South Africans during the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens (we are an official sponsor of the Hong Kong Sevens). They’d love to introduce handy to South Africans for our Hong Kong Sevens social media competition – they’re giving away a package holiday for 2 people to the Sevens, including tickets for the event!
