DP World Lions and DP World’s Imperial business launch female youth sports development programme ahead of International Women’s Day

Yesterday Imperial, a DP World Company, in partnership with the DP World Lions, proudly celebrated the capping ceremony of 20 young South African women at the DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, in celebration of International Women’s Day this week.

The DP World Lions Women’s team took on the task of identifying 20 eager, energetic and motivated young women from within their network to upskill in the field of sport. Through an intensive training course, these young women were trained and certified in physical education to enable them to work in schools as physical education coaches.

“We are extremely proud to have trained and capped 20 young women as part of our ongoing commitment to sports development in South Africa and on the African continent,” says Esha Mansingh, Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs & Investor Relations at Imperial.

“Imperial, under the DP World banner, places a strong emphasis on empowering and supporting the communities in which we operate, and on building a better future together. Sport has the power to do this – inspire, motivate and create opportunities where there once may not have been any. We are excited to be part of this new initiative and the potential it has for the young women of South Africa at a time where development of women is critically important, she adds”

Imperial, as part of this commitment, will support the top performers in this group of trained women in finding employment within the physical education field, and hopes to continue training more women in this field.

Out of this initial intake, we have already identified five young women who can be immediately placed as physical education coaches. This not only demonstrates the power of partnership but shows how projects like this contribute to sustainable job creation, building skills and opening up new avenues for young women – key to the ethos of International Women’s Day,” continues Mansingh.
