South African ultra-marathon champion Gerda Steyn has won the 2025 Comrades Marathon, claiming her fourth title in the prestigious race. The competition, held on June 8, saw thousands of athletes tackling the 89.98km down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
Steyn executed a well-strategized race, maintaining a steady pace while allowing early leader Elizabeth Mukoloma to set the tempo. At the 2-hour, 42-minute mark, Steyn made her move, overtaking Mukoloma on the descent to Drummond. From that point, she extended her lead, finishing the race with an impressive performance.
The 2025 Comrades Marathon marked the 98th edition of the world’s oldest ultra-marathon, attracting over 22,000 participants, all aiming to complete the course within the 12-hour cutoff.
Steyn’s triumph continues South Africa’s strong legacy in ultra-distance running. Her achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and reinforces the country’s dominance in endurance sports.
