The South African running community was challenged by the organisers of this year’s Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon (TTOM) to raise R1 million for charity, with participants amassing just under R700 000. Of this, R125 000 was accrued by 53 runners who answered the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s call to #Run4Animals, with another R20 000 being donated by OneDayOnly.co.za.
“The fundraising landscape is particularly challenging for the animal welfare sector and we’re grateful for mass public participation events like the TTOM that allow us the opportunity to mobilise our supporters and raise funds for our cause,” says SPCA Communications Manager Belinda Abraham. “Entry would however be impossible without our team sponsors, Bravecto and OneDayOnly.co.za, whose generous contributions cover entry expenses and allow us to incentivise runners with wonderful goody bags and prizes. All proceeds go towards our work – preventing cruelty to and promoting the welfare of all animals.”
Annemi Mennen, Head of Marketing at OneDayOnly.co.za shares, “We decided to get involved this year to help ensure that the SPCA is able to continue its incredible work. Every year, the organisation has the heart-breaking task of having to deal with 45 000 cases of animal cruelty. Yet, each and every one of these is handled with the profound caring and concern of its inspectors, veterinarians, support staff and animal welfare assistants. Without funding the SPCA would be unable to advocate for and give a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves.”
“We would like to encourage more runners and non-runners to aid in the eradication of animal cruelty by donating funds and goods, volunteering their time, or joining Team SPCA to run, cycle or participate in any other sports event in order to fundraise for the organisation. Together, we can make a difference and create a world where no animal suffers needlessly,” concludes Mennen.
