Red Bull Racing has officially announced Liam Lawson as the new teammate for four-time world champion Max Verstappen for the 2025 Formula 1 season. The 22-year-old New Zealander has been promoted from Red Bull’s junior team, RB, to replace Sergio Perez. Lawson’s journey to this point has been nothing short of remarkable, and he is eager to learn from one of the greatest drivers in F1 history.
Lawson began his F1 journey in 2023 when he made his debut at the Dutch Grand Prix, stepping in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo. He impressed during his five-race stint and returned for the final six rounds of the 2024 season after Ricciardo was dropped. Lawson has shown great potential, finishing in the points three times and achieving a best qualifying performance of fifth place at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expressed confidence in Lawson’s abilities, stating that his performances have demonstrated that he is not only capable of delivering strong results but is also a real racer. Horner added that Lawson’s arrival continues the team’s long history of promoting from within the Red Bull Junior Programme, following in the footsteps of champions like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.
