Although this isn’t new, in October 2013 Twitter rolled out a test to allow anyone to directly message you even if the done follow you but a month later, this test died off.
One would say that this new feature can either be a “blessing” or a “curse” simply because Twitter has made Direct messaging much more “easier”. This feature is optional allowing users to either turn on or turn off this feature.
They’ve (Twitter) also added a prominent direct message button to profiles on the iPhone and Android devices to encourage you to use the feature. Unfortunately iPad users will have to wait a bit longer until this feature is loaded on to their devices.
The reason behind this sudden new feature is to keep up with social media apps like Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger. The company also announced recently another feature in which it allows you to send direct group messages.
